These are a few of the books that got me started on the path to happiness. I hope that they can help you as much as they helped me. (I belong to the Amazon Affiliates program so if you click on the link and buy any products on Amazon, I get a (very) small percentage of the sale.)
Codependent No More: How to Stop Controlling Others and Start Caring for Yourself
This book is a classic that was one of the very first self-help books I ever read after my first devastating break-up left me wondering which end was up. This book showed me the way and started me on my path of self-discovery. Many of us who are in the types of relationships we find ourselves us in will see ourselves reflected in the pages of this book. I highly recommend her other books as well.
Women Who Love Too Much: When You Keep Wishing and Hoping He'll Change
Another first favorite book of mine. This one goes into the details of why it is we choose the men we do and why we find ourselves giving so much of ourselves to someone who doesn’t reciprocate on the same level. It explores why we have such a hard time getting out of a relationship that we are not getting anything out of in return, and explores the reasons why we stay.
Journey from Lost to Found
Literally, the very first book I stumbled on when in a fog after the breakup of what I thought was the perfect relationship (how little did I know!). This little gem of a book provided me with such comfort as I realized I wasn’t the only one to feel the way I was feeling. I’ve read many of Susan Jeffers books and would recommend them as well, but this one will always be my favorite of hers.
Are You the One for Me?: Knowing Who's Right and Avoiding Who's Wrong
This book is a classic and filled with so many insights and information that it gave me so many things to think about when it comes to dating and what we look for in a guy. It was one of the first books I read when I was out of my depressed phase after my big breakup, when I was ready to even think about dating again. I’ve read most of her other books and would recommend them as well.
Something More: Excavating Your Authentic Self
Loved, loved, loved this book. This rare find is full of so many gems that will cause you to think about your life and your loves in a way that few books have duplicated. I loved her other books about being grateful and thankful, but this one really validated me and made me feel like I had worth along the journey.
A Woman's Worth
I think this is my all time favorite book (if I really had to choose just one!). It is so authentically affirming of our worth as women and reminds us of so many things we forget about ourselves. It speaks so much about our worth being based on just our being who we are, and not about proving ourselves, that much of my inspiration on matters of self-esteem and confidence come from Marianne’s writings in this book. All her books are beautiful, and full of soul, compassion and understanding of our journey along this path. She has such a gift of insight for who we as women and reminds us in a beautiful way of why we were created and what we are all about. I think I read this book through in one setting into the wee hours of the night when I finally felt like living again after that that initial heartbreak.
What Smart Women Know
If you’re ready for some humour amongst the otherwise serious books I’ve mentioned, this one is my favorite. You'll identify with much of the wise, true wisdom from these authors and laugh with them at some of the absurd things we do in the name of love. Filled with truths mixed with just the right of humor to remind us that this journey doesn’t always have to be so serious. I loved all the related books these authors wrote on this subject.
